Cat Euthanasia at Home
A calm, gentle goodbye for your cat — at home
Saying goodbye to a cat is one of the hardest decisions a family can face. Cats are sensitive creatures who often feel safest in their own environment - which is why many families choose cat euthanasia at home, where stress is reduced and comfort comes first.
At Furwells, cat euthanasia at home is provided by experienced veterinarians who understand feline behaviour, illness, and the unique bond between cats and their people. Our focus is on calm, dignity, and giving you the space to say goodbye in your own way.
Why families choose at-home euthanasia for cats
For many cats, travel, unfamiliar smells and clinic visits can be frightening — especially when they’re elderly, unwell, or in pain. At home, your cat can:
Remain in familiar, comfortable surroundings
Avoid the stress of a trip to the vet clinic
Be close to the people (and pets) they love
Pass peacefully
What to expect on the day
We take time to talk with you, answer any questions and ensure you feel supported before anything proceeds - nothing is rushed.
Your cat is first given a gentle sedative, allowing them to drift into a deep, peaceful sleep.
Once they are fully relaxed and unaware, a final medication is administered.
Passing is quiet and calm, often while your cat is resting in a favourite spot.
You’re welcome to hold your cat, or sit nearby – whatever feels right for you.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
Some families wonder whether it’s kinder to wait for a natural passing, however it can be very unpredictable. By the time a cat appears close to passing, unfortunately illness is usually advanced and discomfort is increased. Choosing euthanasia can help prevent unnecessary suffering and allow for a calm, peaceful farewell. It gives families the space to be present, say goodbye, and remember their cat at rest, rather than during a difficult final moment. If you’re unsure, we’re always happy to talk things through with you, day or night.
-
No. Cat euthanasia is designed to be peaceful and pain-free. Your cat is first given a sedative so they fall into a deep sleep. Once they are fully unconscious, the final medication is administered, allowing them to pass quietly without distress.
-
Most appointments last around 60–90 minutes. This includes time to talk with our vet, settle your cat, and say goodbye. We never rush - the time we spend with you is guided by you and your cat’s comfort.
-
Yes, of course. Many families choose to hold their cat or sit close to them. We will help support whatever feels right for you and your cat.
-
You can spend as much time with your cat as you need. Aftercare and cremation arrangements are usually discussed and organised ahead of the appointment, so there’s no need to make decisions on the day. Once you’re ready, we will respectfully care for your cat and either transport them to the cremation provider ourselves or coordinate collection from your home, ensuring this part of the process is handled sensitively and seamlessly.
